Italy’s Amalfi Coast is renowned throughout the world for the unique beauty of its landscapes. Twisting roads winding through rocky cliffs reveal tantalising glimpses of small villages, secluded bays, and inlets, all looking out over a clear blue sea. It is a striking location for a luxury yacht charter.
With 50 km of shoreline running along the southern edge of the Sorrentine Peninsula, in the Campania region, the area is considered by UNESCO an outstanding illustration of Mediterranean scenery. It is a region that has captivated visitors for centuries. And still does today with its sheer cliffs and rugged craggy mountains, small beaches and picturesque pastel-coloured fishing villages; while lush green Mediterranean vegetation colours the slopes of the surrounding hills and cliffs. Here are five activities that we recommend you don't miss when you are there on your dream luxury yacht charter holiday.
1. Do a road trip
Not for the fainthearted the "road of a thousand bends", hugs the sheer cliffs with huge vertical drops down to the sea and often barely a low stone wall between. But you will be rewarded with incredible views of the breathtakingly beautiful deep blue sea far below and the picturesque colourful villages tumbling down the steep slopes. The road will also take you right through some of these villages on narrow winding lanes. The drivers of large vehicles here are exceptionally skilled and watching 2 buses pass each other inch by inch is all part of the experience.
2. Become a history buff
Visit Pompeii, a flourishing Roman town that was totally covered with ash 25 metres deep when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD79. The lack of air and moisture preserved the relics here in a state rarely found elsewhere. The minutiae of daily life that these ruins reveal is quite remarkable. There are two other archaeological sites that shouldn't be missed: the ruins of the holiday resort of Herculaneum are well preserved with a wealth of archaeological finds, while the outstanding murals at Torre Annunziata provide a vivid picture of the lavish lifestyle of the wealthy of that era.
3. Stretch the legs
For the more active ditch the car and do the "Path of the Gods" by foot. The ancient mule tracks and precipitous cliff edges that link the coastal towns Praiano to Positano will quite literally take your breath away. 10km from town to town you will walk amongst sweet lemon orchards, dusty olive groves and colourful wild flowers. The panoramas are incredible and impressive. And for the even more active try one of the 9 trails to the summit of Mt Vesuvius, hiking through the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve for even more fantastic vistas down to Naples when you get to the top.
4. Enjoy fine food
While the Amalfi Coast is most known for its spectacular scenery a taste-bud tour of the region is a true joy. There is no shortage of Michelin-starred establishments and there is no doubt that award-winning food is even better when eaten "al fresco" with views that are simply stunning. Obviously the seafood here is going to be sensational but each chef has their own signature dishes and between prawns and octopus, swordfish and spider crabs, the choices are many and always mouth-watering. Whether you decide to savour a memorable meal created by one of Italy's most famous chefs, or enjoy more relaxed dining in one of the sea edge restaurants, you can count on some of the finest Italian cuisine you'll ever eat.
5. Discover the local delicacies
The Amalfi Coast is an incredibly fertile region and food plays an important role in the day-to-day living of her locals. So as well as high-end fine dining take the time to sample some of their local specialities. That sublime tangy but sweet liqueur limoncello comes from here. Their cheeses are creamy and smooth – both ricotta and mozzarella are produced in small artisan workshops. The Neapolitan influence is also strong with crispy based pizzas and rich, refreshing gelatos on every corner.
It has to be one of the most gorgeous places on the planet and exploring it on a luxury charter yacht one of the most amazing ways to explore and experience it.
